So, to recap everyone’s language abilities here…
Sven is fluent in both Ceannic and Sønska.
Thorn is fluent in Ceannic. His spoken Sønska is very good, understandable and mostly-correct; his understanding is even better, though he has trouble with expressions and idioms.
Violet is fluent in Ceannic. She reads fluently in Sønska and has an impressive command of idioms, but she’s prone to not knowing how things are pronounced, which gives her trouble in speaking as well as understanding speech.
Iona is fluent in Sønska. She speaks limited-but-clear Ceannic, and her understanding is pretty good, unless you use too many words she hasn’t learned.
Ragnild is fluent in Sønska. She speaks very little Ceannic, and her understanding is okay at best, depending on how slowly and clearly you’re speaking.
Thorn (thinking): One of these girls was mean to Leif . . . I didn’t understand enough Sønska to follow the whole thing, but the, the tone of voice was clear enough.
I didn’t see their faces. Going by the voice, I’m pretty sure it was the brunette. But she’s barely said anything so far.
. . . possibly because she doesn’t understand enough Ceannic to really follow this conversation. Her dad’s a professional and it seems like her sister’s been keeping up. I bet she feels left out. And she is just a kid.
Thorn: Hey, ah . . . if you can talk to me in Sønska, it will help me to practice.
Ragnild: Oh! Uh, sure. I can do that.
