15. Is there a certain person in this world that they cannot stand? The very mention of this person’s name makes them tremble with anger or fear.
16. Is your character the athletic type or more of a couch potato? What are some sports/games that they like?

18. What kind of home would they want to live in? Where would they place this abode?
19. Would your character be the kind to get into fights? (physical or verbal) Would they be a good fighter or cave in rather easily?
20. Does your character like animals? What are some of their favorite animals? Would they want pets? What about mythological creatures?
21. What is one of your character’s biggest fears? How would they react when dealing with this fear?
22. What kind of tattoos, piercings, birthmarks, freckles, and other such unique physical features do they have?
23. What is your character like when it comes to school? What subjects are they good/bad at? Do they get in trouble a lot or are well behaved?

25. Is there something traumatic from your character’s past that greatly affects them even to this day?
26. What is their lover like sexually? How do they feel about their lover’s quirks, needs, etc?

42. Is there anything in your character’s past that they regret, haunts them, or they wish they could change?
43. Does your character have a switch that changes aspects of their personality whether they are around friends, family, etc. Is there someone who gets to see their true self?

45. Is your character the kind to hide their true emotions or do they wear their heart on their sleeve?
46. What is some random affectionate thing that your character always does to their lover?
47. Is your character outgoing? Would they be the leader of the friend group, or the quiet one that gets dragged along?
48. Is there anything in particular that would ignite your character’s jealousy? Or does your character not get envious?
49. What is something that your character has nightmares about? Are these frequent? Do they heavily affect your character’s mood?

Katya has some deeply treasonous convictions, and is concerned about what would happen if the wrong people found out. It makes her extremely cautious.
11. What is something that would make your character fly into a rage?
Nothing, but only because Katya has the superpower of being stoic and expressionless no matter what.

As mentioned above, she doesn’t show it…but there are some politicians she hates very deeply.
19. Would your character be the kind to get into fights? (physical or verbal) Would they be a good fighter or cave in rather easily?
Not unless absolutely necessary. She doesn’t like overt conflict. And she’s not the most athletic person, so there are a lot of physical fights she’d lose.
27. If your character was going to get arrested, what would be the most likely reason for it?
Well, the most likely *charge* would be grand theft, sabotage, or treason.
29. What is one of the most courageous things your character has ever done for a loved one?
Love is a strong word…but she covers for her fellow servants in various rule-bending situations.
31. Would your character be the kind capable of killing? Would they enjoy killing or only use it when necessary or, perhaps, refuse to kill no matter what?
If someone was evil enough, and she had a strategic opportunity, Katya would absolutely be capable of poisoning them in their sleep. She wouldn’t be happy afterward, but she could do it.
Can I just ask for #1 for everyone? For those with plant names, how are the plants associated with the characters?
95% of them are “I liked the way it sounded.” I haven’t been looking up plant names in the Victorian language of flowers, or anything that symbolic, before applying them to characters — although I might try it some time if I get stuck.
Many of the names are “homage to the person/character who inspired them.” (Olive = Olivia, Grassie = Gracie, Astrid is named after Astrid Lindgren, etc.) And then there are puns, like Leif.
All the embassy guards are named after valkyries. Several of the Sønska officials are named after predatory animals.
Ceannic siblings usually get alliterative names. (Thorn & Tansy, Hawthorn & Hyacinth, eventually Rowan & Rhodey & Rosie.) The names Holly & Ivy were given to associated characters because of a song reference. Same for Ebony & Ivy.
Fruit names, e.g. Plum (first name) and Pommier (last name), stand out as traditionally Iuilic. Lots of Iuilic actors and comedians, including Hedge Dubois, change their traditional-sounding names for the stage. The fact that Plum Estragon has a very Iuilic name, but Thorn and Tansy both have more mainstream names, hints at some family stuff that will be explored in more detail…whenever I get around to doing a storyline with present-day Plum.

Juniper: Their arms. You remember how people fawned over Michelle Obama having strong, shapely arms? It’s like that.

Rowan has this keening groan of frustration he makes when he’s trying not to correct someone (and about to fail).

Olive: Used to have some people she really hated, but all of them have been dead for at least 20 years now, and it’s been very therapeutic to help dismantle their legacies.

Sønska people in general are allllll about sunny weather. Leif also likes days when it’s drizzly, but warm, so you can comfortably hang out in the rain.
46. What is some random affectionate thing that your character always does to their lover?
Birch: Texts them cute pictures when he’s thinking of them. With Annie, it’s usually puppy animations.

10. Is your character more feminine or masculine?
Complicated question because, for all three of their cultures, a lot of things aren’t gendered. Like, Thorn’s long flowing hair isn’t an unusual style for Ceannic men, and on the flip side, his knighthood isn’t an unusual profession for women.
I guess I’d say Leif is pretty average for Sønheim overall — so, more femme than most guys — while the other three are average for guys in their respective cultures.
Mata and Thorn would both be read as “too femme to be straight” in the modern-day US, although the kind of people who see that as a bad thing would be too intimidated by Thorn’s biceps to say so.
02. What is one of your character’s biggest insecurities? Are they able to hide it easily or can others easily exploit this weakness?
Mata: He worries about stuff happening to Pato, especially since it would be so easy for Pato to end up in a situation where he can’t communicate. And if he’s working on a life-or-death engineering project, he’ll have nightmares about the bad ending where everyone dies horribly. Since he’s so confident and optimistic, most people who meet him would never notice.

Colorful peacock feather tattoo across his chest. Stylized beaver between his shoulder blades. (Pata has a stylized duck in the same place — it’s a coming-of-age tradition in Tamapoa, you get one when you turn 21.)
