Was able to stop myself at 10 out of 40, somehow.
4 Delphinium
5 Kale Romarin
10 Atarangi, Kallie and/or Kiki
13 Hyacinth
20 Dexie (D10)
21 Lady Stanczia
28 Bramble (yes, I am a fangirl)
31 Niamh and/or Tiernan
37 Hedge & Grassie
40 Gloriosa (asking for a friend)
Delphinium, 4. “Do they have a happy place? Somewhere they go to in their heads when they need to relax?”
There are real/physical places she goes to enjoy herself — usually a stylist or a clothing store. But I don’t think she has a mental headspace like that, no. (When she needs to de-stress, she does an intense workout and then has a nap.)
Kale, 5. “At what stage of their life were they the happiest?”
Mid-20s. He wasn’t hiding or afraid anymore, he had a steady job that he thought was doing good, his home life was stable, his powers were flourishing, and Calyx’s health was the best it ever got.
The Neineikura system, 10. “What is their favorite memory from their childhood?”
…unfortunately, I don’t think they have a lot of memories, period, from their childhood(s).
Hyacinth, 13. “Do they have any tattoos? If no, would they ever consider getting one?”
None yet — she’s too young to get any without parental consent, and her parents are firmly in the mode of “if you still want it at 18 you can get it then.” But she definitely has plans. And some folders of Tattoo Inspiration Images in preparation.
Dexie, 20. “How would a close friend they’ve known for a long time describe them?”
Cunning, intense, you should never assume they’re not paying attention no matter how casual they look on the surface, the friend you call if you need help hiding a body.
Stanczia, 21. “Do they have any personal insecurities?”
She used to. At this point, it’s been a few centuries since she felt insecure about anything.
Bramble, 28. “Are they ticklish?”
Yes, but he doesn’t enjoy it, so he encourages RESPECT for TICKLING AUTONOMY.
Niamh & Tiernan, 31. “Are they a messy eater or a neat eater?”
Tiernan: always neat. Niamh: messy pre-soulbond, neat now. (Although she was a puppy pre-soulbond, so this might’ve just happened as she matured no matter what.)
Hedge & Grassie, 37. “If they had the chance, would they prefer to travel to the past or to the future?”
Grassie: past, because she has a bunch of charmingly absurd questions that she wants to ask various historical figures. (No specific examples, I can’t think of anything funny enough off the top of my head.)
Hedge: future, because she’d be worried about screwing the past up.
Gloriosa, 40. “Is there anyone or anything that immediately instills fear in them?”
No people, and nothing in terms of social interactions/situations…just nature things like “a large advancing predator” or “an incoming avalanche.” (The projection Kale made to scare off her and Oleander was in the “large advancing predator” category.)
Well I’ll be. (This, and the rest of the Q&A, made my November).
Excellent!
(…any particular favorite bits?)
Dexie as “the friend you call if you need help hiding a body”… I mean. Yes. Because they definitely have disposed of bodies. Not only do they have the Vibe, I’d bet they definitely actually have. XD
Katya – 18
“Do they have a certain skill that they’re particularly proud of?”
She wouldn’t tell anyone about it, but on the inside, Katya is quietly proud of her hacking/espionage skills.
16 – Larch
“What is something about them that people would not expect just by looking at them?”
Depends on whether we’re talking about “other people in Ceannis” or “people reading the comic”…I do try to put less appearance-based judgment in the in-universe culture.
But he’s a big guy who clearly does stuff to build his muscle mass, so people would probably expect him to have a job that involves physical labor. Or something where you have to look muscular, like “actor who plays Thor.” And in fact, no, he just teaches young people to sing.
Thanks! 😀
I’d like to ask some of the younger characters. Stopped myself at 4.
12 – Hawthorn
21 – Ragnild
33 – Angelica
38 – Cedar
Hawthorn, 12. “Do they have any favorite possessions?”
His historical icon collection! He’s extremely proud and protective over it.
Ragnild, 21. “Do they have any personal insecurities?”
Her Ceannic-language skills aren’t great, which doesn’t bother her when it comes to classes or tests, but if she has to interact with an actual Ceannic-speaking human it makes her anxious. Also, she worries about not doing enough to protect/support Iona.
Angelica, 33. “What moment of their life made them feel most loved?”
Unfortunately, it’s probably something in the category of “she made up a dramatic story about someone being horrible to her, it spread widely, and an outpouring of strangers showered her with sympathy and admiration.”
Cedar, 38. “Who had the biggest impact in their life, both positive and negative?”
At this point in canon, his parents — he’s been meticulously following their plan for his life, reaping both the positive and the negative results. He’ll break away from that eventually.
Thank you!
I hope for the twins Ragnild will eventually understand that Iona doesn’t need so much protection from her sister.
Cedar going to break away from his parent’s plans is something I’m looking forward to.
And for Angelica, it’s sad she’s really been terrible this whole time. Maybe she doesn’t even like herself.
Violet 11
Leif 15
Ivy 30
Violet, 11. “Do they have a ‘type’ that they’re usually attracted to?”
Subby Tamaputians!
Leif, 15. “What is their dream house like?”
At the moment, Leif’s most self-indulgent fantasies are “what if I was making enough money that I could afford to split an apartment with a few roommates, that would be luxury.”
If he got in the right headspace to imagine actually owning a house…it would be cozy and warm. The bedroom would have a nice big bed to share with the partner(s) of his choice, but there would also be a room that was his personal space and nobody else’s. Lots of big sun-facing windows. A fancy expensive sound system for his music. A lush garden and lots of potted plants — but it’s not his job to maintain them, he pays someone else to do that.
Ivy, 30. “Is there something they secretly wish they could do but are too afraid to?”
You know, I don’t think so. There are things she wishes she could do but hasn’t, for other reasons — it’s expensive, it would need too much effort/preparation, the gritty reality isn’t as fun as it looks on TV, etc. And there are things she’s afraid of. But there aren’t really things she wants to do and is avoiding out of fear.
Leif- 4
Thorn, Holly, Ivy- 15
Kale- 33
Rowan, Imri, Stanczia- 34
Hermosa, Katya- 36
Leif, 4. “Do they have a happy place? Somewhere they go to in their heads when they need to relax?”
Not a place, really, but he relaxes by thinking about music he likes.
—
Thorn, Holly, Ivy, 15. “What is their dream house like?”
Thorn: doesn’t have specific home-related dreams, he’s happy as long as he gets “the utilities work and all my stuff is there.”
Holly: either a mansion in the Burnspoint hills, or a penthouse loft in some other fancy area, so she’s always running into celebrities around town. Roomy enough to entertain. Plenty of display space for treasures and souvenirs from cool adventures she’s had. There’s a hot tub.
Ivy: a super-cute houseboat! (Note, she has no experience with houseboats and no practical idea whether she’d enjoy it, she just likes the idea.)
—
Kale, 33. “What moment of their life made them feel most loved?”
Something from when he was young, before Calyx was born, and he was in trouble/danger/distress on a day when his grandfathers were both together enough to step in and fix it.
—
Rowan, Imri, Stanczia, 34. “Which of the senses would they hate to lose the most: vision, hearing, smell, taste, or touch?”
Rowan: probably touch, it’s the only one he can’t imagine compensating for with accessibility tech.
Imri: taste, it’s his favorite.
Stanczia: would hate losing any of them, it would make her feel vulnerable, and she didn’t live to her 900’s by having any vulnerabilities.
—
Hermosa, Katya, 36. “If they could ask anyone one question and get the absolute truth, who and what would they ask?”
Hermosa: well, uh, assuming it’s not a Bad Memory Day where he needs basic information about his life filled in…he would think of a piece of national-security intel Ceannis wants, and ask someone who could provide it.
He would be very, very tempted to ask Kale/Kudzu something about his feelings or motivations. But Hermosa wouldn’t be sure he wants Kale absolutely unable to demur/obfuscate/tell any polite lies in the answer.
Katya: would ask someone rich for their password and/or bank information.
LOL @ the Katya answer! 😉
If I’ve not mentioned it before, I love these little insights.
My headcanon is now that Ivy’s dream ‘houseboat’ is in a relatively large pond on Holly’s Dream Burnspoint Hills Mansion grounds; close enough to the house that it’s not a pain to visit, far enough that Ivy can squee to her heart’s content without disturbing Holly’s concentration. Holly isn’t aware that Ivy has thought that far ahead, but if told, she’d think that it actually doesn’t sound that bad.
Hopefully Kale has some ‘feel-loved’ moments ahead, even if it’s Philia and not Eros. Storge would also be nice, but there’s no ready source of that on this side of the Shadowlands.
I can’t hate Stanczia’s non-answer.
Hermosa continues to be a sweet, crafty husband… I’m not sure that, in his position, I wouldn’t press Kalezu, just to eliminate all doubt.
Pascentia 30
“Is there something they secretly wish they could do but are too afraid to?”
…yes, and it’s “relax and take some time for herself.”
Ha. Nice!
Geirolul, 23 and 38.
23. “How would they react to finding out someone lied to them, even if it was for their own safety/well-being?”
If it was someone she didn’t know well, she’d be exasperated but take it in stride. “Guess it just goes to show you can’t be too trusting these days.”
If it was a friend or colleague, she’d be hurt and disappointed. Maybe even more so in the “for your own safety” situation. “You didn’t think I could learn the truth and still managed to behave in a safe way? Does that mean you think I’m stupid? Or fragile? Or unreliable? Or…”
38. “Who had the biggest impact in their life, both positive and negative?”
Not sure whether it’s overstating things to say “Astrid Rødlund.” She wasn’t somebody Lulen knew personally, but Lulen’s life was really chaotic for a long time, and the Holger Saga books were a huge source of joy and reassurance. (She was in a much better place by the time that got yanked away, but still.)
Grassie Amande – 20, 30, and 37.
20. “How would a close friend they’ve known for a long time describe them?”
Hardest working star in show business. Seriously, will someone let this woman have a vacation and a nap. Genuinely nice and effortlessly charming. Makes perfect sense if you’re paying enough attention.
30. “Is there something they secretly wish they could do but are too afraid to?”
Go to an event in a backless, sleeveless evening gown.
37. “If they had the chance, would they prefer to travel to the past or to the future?”
I answered this one in an earlier comment: past, because she has a bunch of charmingly absurd questions that she wants to ask various historical figures. (I still haven’t thought of any specific examples that are funny enough…reader suggestions welcome.)
Dexie 8
…also 19 and 36
8. Have they ever broken any bones? If so, how?
Probably, but I’m going to hold off giving details for now — it seems like the kind of thing I might want to make plot-relevant later, so any random thing I come up with now is likely to get retconned.
19. How would a stranger they just met describe them?
“Nice enough. Mild-mannered, easygoing and confident. Snappy dresser.”
36. If they could ask anyone one question and get the absolute truth, what would they ask?
Same as Hermosa, actually: they would think of a piece of national-security intel Ceannis wants, and ask someone who could provide it.
Anything that’s personally important to them, they’re convinced they know the answer already. (I’m not saying they’re always right, ftr. But they don’t have any sense of “I might be wrong about this one, it would be nice to get it confirmed.” Just conviction all the way down.)
Thank you!
