For most of the ongoing webcomics I follow, I use my ComicRocket reading list to keep track of where I am in the archives, and get notified about new updates. Makes it easy to share around as a general rec list, too.
The following series have been on hiatus for so long, I’m officially dropping them from the “ongoing” reclist. Here’s a sendoff post. Including some fanart I’ve done for each of them.
If you’re reading this after June 2026, and any of these comics have started up again, feel free to comment and share the good news!
Chroma Key: When Kim and her friends were young, they used to watch a show called SUPER FIGHTING MIGHTY FIGHTERS. It was cheap and corny and involved a lot of spandex. After ten long years of growing up and moving on, they should be too old for such things.
But when a mysterious alien enters their lives, offering the chance to live out their childhood dreams and save the world in the process… the lure of the past may prove difficult to resist.
I always like a good “young adults have to balance the tropes of an Action-Fantasy Anime Series with the messiness of their Actual Real World Lives” series. But I’m A Cat Person did that with collectible-critter and battle-game anime. Chroma Key does it with super sentai.
The creators ran out of steam before they had a chance to get deep into “what is the actual lore/backstory of these aliens who are mimicking Power Rangers tropes to recruit human helpers?” Which is a bummer. Still, the human characters are well-drawn and relatable, and I like to think they’ll come out all right in the end.
Goddess of Paradise: An ancient and powerful goddess wakes from a deep slumber only to find every aspect of her godhood mysteriously taken from her. Now she must track down her nine divine spirit partners in order to restore her power (and punish whoever is responsible), but the greatest opposition to her goals turns out to be the relationship problems she left behind.
…I might have a thing for “goddess/devoted priestess” ships? Specifically when the goddess has the flaws/foibles of a well-rounded mortal character, and the priestess is aware of that. (Possibly the only person in the goddess’s life who truly understands it.)
I also like when a super-powerful reality-bending character has to deal with a world that Is Not Cooperating the way they expect it to. Our goddess here took what was supposed to be a short nap, wakes up to find her whole religion has moved on, and the archive covers two solid adventures of “figuring out how to cope with some aspect of that.”
SpectraSpell: 13 year old Vera has recently moved to the small town of Vättered, Sweden — a seemingly unremarkable place at first, but strange things are happening and everything might not be what it seems. SpectraSpell is a story about kids and magic, and what it really means to be different.
A “cute witch” type of magical-girl story. Featuring adorable kids, some unique twists, and absolutely lovely detailed manga-style artwork. Seriously, this is one of those you can read just for the pretty art.
Old enough that the main website still links to the SmackJeeves mirror (RIP). I’m pleasantly relieved the standalone site is still up at all! If you’re reading this in the future and it’s gone, try the Webtoon mirror instead.
Gloomverse: In a world filled with magic, she’s one of the few who don’t seem to have a knack for it. In what could be a lucky twist of fate, she ends up as the Assistant to the most famous magician in the world! Unfortunately, he’s not exactly as he seems off-stage. Will the Assistant prove she’s good enough for the job, or will his antics drive her off first?
One of those series that starts off as wacky shenanigans — the artist has a really good eye for funny expressions and well-timed comedy beats — then builds up to hitting you with Feelings.
It’s also good with fun color/naming themes! Which I, with my “all the Ceannic characters in Leif & Thorn have plant names” shtick, appreciate.
There’s a lot unresolved when the archive ends, but we do get to a big moment of transition that was set up from the beginning (you’ll know it when Assistant gets her Outfit Upgrade), which is pretty satisfying in its own right.
Lovespells: A lesbian slowburn romance about a witch who falls in love with a magic knight. Its world, character design, and art style are all heavily influenced by JRPGs, especially the Tales Of series. We promise they get together.
…Okay, so they have not yet gotten together. But this one is kinda tropey enough that, by the end of the archive, your mind can fill in how it would go. Our leads cute, their personalities have built up a fun dynamic, and it’s clear that they both Like Each Other.
This also does some neat things with the JRPG-influenced worldbuilding, like a thoughtful take on “magical disability,” that I wish more fantasy writers would run with.
