Leif: So, Thorn . . . what do you plan to do now? Long-term, I mean.

Thorn: I don’t know. I’ve been too hungry to plan for anything beyond “getting to you.”

How do vampires get along in this world without ending up like Stanczia and Imri?

I can’t keep being a freelance hunter. Nobody would hire me — not with plenty of human options. And the guilds? They wouldn’t even keep an active, trusted member who got turned, let alone a new applicant.

Maybe if there was a Secret Order of Monster Hunters that was secretly employing vampires . . . But what are the odds of that?

Leif: Could you start your own?

Thorn: What?

Leif: I’d be happy to hire you!

You could stand guard at my work. Watch my back. Then it would only be fair to keep feeding you, using my hazard pay.

The Secret Order of Monster Monster Hunters

What are the odds of that? 100%? Well, ok, maybe just 90%. In fact, how can you be so sure the guilds won’t keep their turned trusted members, just secretly?

Problem isn’t existence of such organization. It’s how do you find it because, well, secret. You basically needs to wait for them to find you. You need to be hiding well enough so normal monster hunters won’t find you but not so good the secret ones won’t either.

Basically, the way you find such organizations is you do the job and hope they find you first. That said, you need to keep in mind that the people who find you might or might not be them. You need to survive anyone finding you who isn’t them, while also not killing them off if they find you.

There’s no need to worry about “hiding too well”, because that’s one of those jobs that sooner or later, you *will* be found. It’s inevitable.

The biggest problem is how to recognize the monster they send to induct you versus the monster who comes after you in aggressive self defense?
